Thyroid gland is a small, butterfly-shaped gland located in the base of neck, just below the Adam’s apple. Thyroid gland secretes hormones T3 (Triiodothyronine) & T4 (Thyroxine).

T4 pro-hormone plays significant role in digestion, brain development, growth and metabolism. T4 is also known as storage hormone.

T4 hormone circulates in two forms i) Free form: enters the body tissues where it is required ii) Bound form: attaches to proteins in the blood, preventing it from entering body tissues.

As T4 exists in two forms, T4 hormone can be measured as Free T4 or Total T4. Free T4 test is considered more accurate than Total T4 test for checking Thyroid function.
